Die Meldorf fibula inscription and epigraphic typology

Bernard Mees

Seiten 259 - 284

Inscriptions found on fibulae from late antiquity are usually accounted maker’s texts. The much-discussed inscription on the Meldorf fibula, however, has not usually been assessed in light of such a typological consideration. A fully contextualised epigraphic approach to the controversial find suggests that the Meldorf inscription preserves a linguistically expected onomastic designation which is paralleled in early continental West Germanic.
