Until the middle of the 19th century, Japanese anthroponyms were chosen in accordance with a complex polyonymic naming system in which different types of names communicated the identity of a person to the surrounding society, thereby situating the individual at a precise place within his or her social framework. This naming system was majorly transformed in the modern period by a switch to mononymy which discouraged name changes. Therefore, names lost their ability to function as markers of the social development of an individual. Consequently, name choice, previously decided according to established rules, became a more private matter reflecting parents’ individual wishes and tastes. Contemporary names have lost systematic marker functions, but nevertheless evoke connotations of a person’s social background. In addition, they serve to distinguish the name-bearer from other members of society, not by communicating his or her social rank, but by expressing the name-bearer’s intrinsic individuality through the name’s own uniqueness.

Bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts bestand in Japan ein komplexes, polyonymisches Namensystem, in welchem unterschiedliche Rufnamen verschiedene Informationen über den Namenträger an dessen Umfeld vermittelten und ihn ebenso an einem festen Platz innerhalb dieses sozialen Umfelds platzierten. Mit dem Beginn der Moderne läutete eine neue Gesetzgebung den Übergang zur Einnamigkeit ein, wodurch Lebensabschnittsnamen verschwanden. Die Namenwahl, die zuvor festeren Regeln folgte, wird im Anschluss freier und dadurch stärker vom persönlichen Geschmack und den Wünschen der Eltern beeinflusst. Heutige Namen zeigen keine systematischen Markerfunktionen mehr an, jedoch rufen auch sie Assoziationen zur sozialen Herkunft einer Person hervor. Eine hohe Namenvielfalt spiegelt das Bestreben wider, durch einen besonderen Namen die Individualität des Namenträgers zu markieren
