Die Personennamen in der fiktionalen Figurenwelt von Richard Wagners Ring des Nibelungen sind formal konsequent durchgestaltet. Es wird gezeigt, welche lautsegmentalen, silbischen und Wortbildungs-Muster Wagner verwendet, um über die Namen die Zugehörigkeit von Figuren zu ‘sozialen’ Gruppen zu kennzeichnen. Besonders auffallend ist, wie er über die Germanische Mythologie hinaus die Gruppe der Walküren und Rheintöchter ausbaut und wie konsequent er deren Namen wortstrukturell durchformt. Während er sie den germanischen Betonungsstrukturen von Appellativen gemäß als Daktylen (Schwértleite) realisiert haben möchte (x́xx), akzentuieren schon seine Zeitgenossen sie, dem neuen onymischen Betonungsmuster xx́x für diesen Typus folgend, als Amphibrachyen (Schwertléite). Dieser Akzentumsprung kann zur Bildung von Namen aus Appellativen verwendet werden, zum Beispiel scherzhaft von Namen für pseudo-mythologische Figuren (Schrótflinte > Schrotflínte).

The personal names in the fictional world of the characters in Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen (Ring of the Nibelung) are structured in a very consistent manner. The aim of this paper is to show which segmental phonetic, syllabic, and word formation patterns Wagner employs to mark the affiliation of characters to certain ‘social’ groups. It is especially remarkable how he creates additional members of two groups, the Valkyries and the Rheintöchter (Rhenish Daughters) and how consistently he imparts a common structure on their names. Although he wishes the names to be pronounced as dactyls as in Germanic appellatives (x́xx, e.g. Schwértleite ‘knighting’), even his contemporaries accentuate them as amphibrachs following the new onymic accent pattern xx́x for names of this type (Schwertléite ‘Valkyrie of knighting’). This change in accentuation can be used to transform appellatives into names, e.g. humorously into names for pseudo-mythological characters (Schrótflinte ‘shotgun’ > Schrotflínte ‘Valkyrie of hunting’)
